Trey Morris is in his Second season as the head coach of Jacksonville State’s men’s tennis program. His promotion from within was announced on July 7, 2023, bringing a rising star in the industry to Jax State.
Morris spent the Spring 2023 campaign in Jacksonville as the team’s associate head coach. In his first semester with the Red-and-White he saw immediate success both on the court and on the recruiting trail. Morris led the Gamecocks to an overall record of 13-10, highlighted by the team’s first win over rival Kennesaw State in nine years. On the recruiting trail, Jax State landed the No. 33 recruiting class nationally and highest-ranked class in the state of Alabama. That recruiting class included Aman Dahiya, who reached a ITF Junior career-high ranking of No. 62 in the world. In addition, prep signees Zach Murphy and Marko Milosavljevic were both ranked in the top three in their home countries. Along with that excellent freshman class, Morris also saw success bringing in highly touted and accomplished transfers in Ivan Marrero Curbelo, Liam Day, and Charlie Penman.
Morris came to Jacksonville State after spending six months as the associate head men’s tennis coach at UAB. During the Fall 2022 campaign, he guided Roman Postolka and Michal Lusovky to the doubles title at the CCB Invitational, a prestigious event featuring top teams from Alabama, LSU, Washington, and other programs. He also helped the Blazers sign Ondrej Valek, an elite prospect with a UTR rating of 12.41.
Prior to his stop in Birmingham, Morris spent three seasons as the Head Men’s Tennis Coach/Director of Tennis at Montana State. He led the Bobcats to their first Big Sky Championship in nine years during the 2022 season. Morris, the 2021-22 Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year, guided Montana State to an 18-8 record during the 2022 spring campaign and his 18 victories fell just one shy of a program record.
In three years at Montana State, Morris held a combined 27-20 record, highlighted by that 18-8 season that also featured a 7-1 mark in Big Sky Conference play. He coached the Bobcats to an 81-48 overall record in singles play and 36-25 record in doubles action that season, guiding doubles tandem Matej Panik and Jamieson Nathan to the program’s first-ever appearance in the NCAA Sweet 16 doubles tournament.
Panik and Nathan finished ranked No. 52 in the nation in 2022, which is the first time a Bobcat duo finished the season ranked in program history. Panik and Daan Van Dijk also excelled under Morris’ tutelage, earning Montana State’s first appearance in the ITA Fall National Championships. Panik and Van Dijk finished that fall with a national ranking of No. 33.
Morris also coached Montana State to a national ranking of No. 64 in 2022, a first for the program in 17 years, the second-highest ranking in program history. The Bobcats finished the 2021-22 campaign ranked fifth in their region.
In his first year at Montana State, Morris received votes for his nationally recognized recruiting class. This was the first time the Bobcats had received votes for their incoming recruiting class in program history.
Before Montana State, Morris worked as Tennis Director and Associate owner at Baskin-McGill Tennis Academy in Marietta, Ga., alongside legendary Team USA Hall of Fame coach Jerry Baskin. During his time at Baskin-McGill, Morris developed top American men’s and women’s junior players, many of which were ranked top 10 in the United States in their respective age groups. Additionally, he sent 10 players to Division I tennis programs and saw a 100 percent college placement for his students.
As a volunteer assistant for both men’s and women’s tennis programs at Appalachian State in fall of 2017, Morris saw Scott Webster rise to an ITA National Singles ranking of No. 61. He also served as an assistant tennis pro at Tennis Dynamics in Marietta, Ga., and at Grandfather Golf & Country Club in Linville, N.C.
Morris enjoyed an All-Conference playing career at Appalachian State from 2015-17, sporting a 44-27 record in singles play and 42-23 mark in doubles action. He earned All-Sun Belt Doubles and All-Sun Belt Academic honors and was a captain for the Mountaineers as a senior. He also played at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton, Ga., in 2014, where his squad finished third nationally in the junior college rankings.
After college, Morris played one year professionally in Germany for TC Rot-Weiss Bliesheim in the Bundesliga and on the ITF Pro Tour. Morris reached a high UTR rating of 13.30 during his playing career.
Morris, a native of Colbert, Ga., graduated from Appalachian State in December 2017 with a bachelor’s degree in communication studies. He lives happily in Jacksonville with his wife, Katelyn, son, James, and daughter, Mara.
